Achaemenid Satrapies > Chorasmia

Chorasmia

Background

Chorasmia, known in Old Persian as Uvârazmiya was a satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire that existed in central Asia. It is believed to have been apart of the empire prior to 522 BC and was administrated by the satrap of Parthia. By the time of the reign of Darius III it had become its own independent kingdom.

When Alexander the Great conquered the Achaemenid Empire he signed a peace treaty in the winter of 328/327 BC with the king of Chorasmia named Pharasmanes. Nowadays the satrapy of Chorasmia corresponds to the modern day province of Khwarezm in Iran.
